I left El Salvador faster than I thought I would and the way I went left regret in it’s wake.
It was easier than I thought to get from Metapán to Suchitoto. Just took 3 buses 😉
Despite what the guy from the hike in NP El Imposible said, I found Suchitoto a nice, small colonial hideout. It invited me to imagine how it must have been when the Spaniards were still controlling this part of the world.
The views over the lake were amazing, but up close a different picture revealed itself: Trash 🤬
The whole shore was covered with it. It astonishes me how much nature can take without dying right away 😔
Once in a while I see an older guy with the typical hat and it just looks so cool. I probably would look like a clown wearing it 😅
What you will also see in the pictures is a dish, well, kind of fast food, called Pupusa(s). It’s a handmade cornmeal tortilla and stuffed with different things. I only had cheese and beans so far but you can get them with meat as well. You find a Pupuseria at every corner…
Otherwise, the cuisine is heavily influenced by Mexico.
After 2 nights I left. It’s the 12th of February already. Day 30 of my trip and beyond halftime of my stay in Central America. Let’s get to San Salvador. I wasn’t looking forward to it and was not disappointed. A big city and with over 30 degrees the joy must have been in another one.
Lately, I am not sure where to go and what would be the “right” decision. As crazy as it sounds, but from time to time, I use a pendulum to let me decide where to go. Because, as I have learned in life, no decision is worse than a bad one.
Originally, I wanted to go to the Bahía in the east but I felt I wouldn’t have time, since I also want to go to Honduras and stay a few days there. The mistake I made was taking the bus. 10.5 hours vs. 1 hour by plane. Don’t ask me why. OK, I tell you, because I like to avoid additional flights and to see a bit of the country. I saw quite a lot as the bus took a different, longer route than what Rome2Rio told me. We went in the direction of the Bahía and I regretted not going there first.
Anyway, the bus left at 5:30 am and it’s destination was San Pedro Sula in Honduras. It wasn’t mine. I went on to Omoa and only shortly before 7 pm I arrived, without a hotel room. However, that was settled fast and worry really is a waste of time.
The weather gods were not in my favor though and it rained quite often. Nevertheless, one could see the beauty of this place with the jungle as a backdrop to the ocean. And I haven’t seen any other (white) tourist 💃
Since I had only a few days, I cannot be sure, but it seems Honduran are less friendly than Salvadoreños…
After losing my other cell phone, I haven’t bought a SIM card anymore. While it makes traveling sometimes more challenging. It also prevents me from constantly looking at the phone and scrolling through Social Media and provides me with a sense of freedom. Will I do that every vacation? Probably not 😏
The next thought is probably a bit controversial. Women and guys are a bit obese here (understatement!). But they wear it differently. If I would have to name it, I’d call it pride. It’s all a cultural thing and makes me think how much of my view on life is influenced by where I grew up. Have you thought about that? Is what you perceive from you or from what you have learned? There are not many absolute truths in life.
Yesterday, I left Honduras to arrive again in Guatemala. A story to be told another time.
Love,
Matthias
