Day 3 – Berching to Zirndorf

What a beautiful surprise!

But let’s start from the beginning 😉 Another cold night in the tent. Even fully clothed and in the sleeping bag that is supposed to be comfortable at 5 degrees…and I am still freezing. But a sunny morning is such a great reward. On an optimistic scale from 1 to 10 I probably reached an 11 today. Not only had I packed the sun cream but today I even applied it. Needless to say that later in the day I got completely soaked 😀

Again, I started not before 10am. But today went really well cycling-wise. Already, the first town (Berching) was beautiful to look at. What an amazing historical downtown! But no time for a stop 10 minutes into cycling 😉

I went most of the time along the Ludwig-Main-Donau channel, which was build in the 19th century by the Bavarian king Ludwig I. Apparently, a dream came true after 1000 years, since Karl the great (sometime around the 8th century) had the idea already. Who am I to complain that my dream(s) take so much time? Anyway, it is a beautiful channel. I imagined that in England one could still use it but here in Germany it was taken out of service. On the other hand, it gives nature a chance to claim it back.

I went through Nürnberg and left the five river cycling path behind. Now I’m on the Paneurope one going from Paris to Prague. Only 1110 km to go (to Paris). However, I managed to see the fifth river of the original tour (Pegnitz)

The most beautiful surprise of today was that my brother Peter and his partner came to visit me and will go cycling with me tomorrow. I felt great when he told me that (and still do). So, today I have a cozy night in my RV (and more importantly…a shower).

Today I managed to do 100 km (first time this year…I even did some cycles around the parking lot to get it :-)). I’ll include the GPS track tomorrow. But here is an overview of the trip I’m doing:

Summary of today: I love surprises!

Love,
Matthias
