As written in the last post, I spent another week in Antigua studying Spanish. Feels like work. I don’t like it 😉
Every Thursday and Sunday is the biggest Mayan market happening in Chichicastenango. The city is about 2.5 hours northwest of Antigua.
I wanted to go on a Thursday as I read it is less touristy. Went with my fellow students of the homestay. It’s fun to immerse yourself in the hassle about the best price for a mask, cloth, shirt or whatever your heart desires 🎭😁
Last Monday, I had to say goodbye to my home for 2 weeks. I stayed in a homestay with a local family, together with other students of the Spanish school. Met an Austrian couple traveling the world for one year (yes, yes, I envy them…need to build up the courage) and an American who stays for 3 months “just” studying. We went out several times and I had great fun. Gave the whole thing “traveling” a different vibe. It felt very comfortable. And, I still don’t like goodbyes…
But without saying goodbye one cannot arrive at a new place and being comfortable is overrated 😏
The journey brought me to Lake Atitlan. This big, blue pearl of a lake was created by the volcanos surrounding it. Some villages, like the one I stayed (Jaibalito), are only reachable by boat (aka lanchas).
What sounds nice in theory, was different in real life. Seems more dogs live there than people and during the night lots of barking and dog shit everywhere 🤦
The lake itself is beautiful to see with the vulcanos in the background. I made a trip to San Juan La Laguna.
Right now, I am having my last coffee in Antigua, where I had another stayover before heading out to El Salvador. I am excited and curious how El Salvador will be. I think this could be a real adventure…without getting shot 😅
Love,
Matthias
